Commissioner meets with VOYPIC to discuss shared opportunities for future engagement

Fiona Ryan, Commissioner for Survivors of Institutional Childhood Abuse and Alicia Toal, Chief Executive of VOYPIC

Commissioner for Survivors of Institutional Childhood Abuse, Fiona Ryan, and VOYPIC’s Chief Executive, Alicia Toal, met to discuss the rights and interests of survivors of non-recent historical institutional child abuse and those of children and young people - and how both organisations can come together to support one another’s work.

Commissioner Ryan spoke about the work of the Office of the Commissioner in representing the interests of victims and survivors of non-recent historical institutional child abuse and making sure that their voices are heard.

The Commissioner heard about the vital work of VOYPIC and the positive difference it has made to so many children in care and care leavers throughout Northern Ireland.

Central to the discussions were the importance of understanding the prevalence of child sexual abuse and violence in Northern Ireland, the experiences of children in care and the limitations and challenges of the care system.

We look forward to engaging with VOYPIC as the Office of the Commissioner continues its work to ensure that the voices of victims and survivors of non-recent historical institutional childhood abuse are heard and, above all, listened to.
